Easter Eggs in HPC
Are there any Easter eggs hidden in HPC code or am I just being fooled by LLMs claiming there are?
With it being the Easter weekend and the kids finding, and me eating, easter eggs I thought it might be fun to see if there were any easter eggs hidden in the HPC world. So naturally I asked my usual GenAI assistant, Gippity.
Allegedly Slurm was named after the drink in Futurama. I’m not sure I believe it though. I tried to search to see if I could find anything but nope, nada. However, Gemini agreed with Gippity and even claims this little factoid is in the Slurm documentation. I couldn’t find it though.
There’s allegedly even a sacred mode with the switch --enable-sacred-slurm but again I couldn’t find any reference to anyone having ever seen this.
So, is there any truth to these? Am I just being gaslighted but GenAI? Are they just shared LLM hallucinations (which in itself is quite interesting if they are and makes the concept of using one LLM to check the work of another quite ridiculous).
