Faster HPC on Bare Metal or in the Cloud?
What’s faster cloud virtual machines or bare metal? The answer may surprise you. It certainly surprised me.

Still think that you can only get the best performance for your HPC workloads by running bare metal on premises? You might need to rethink that.
As part of our recent paper analysing AMD EPYC 4th and 5th generation CPUs we compared AMD’s top of the line processors available for purchase with Genoa and Turin VMs available on your favourite three hyperscalers.
Whilst this is not an exact apples for apples comparison because the hyperscalers use a different (custom) model of CPU, it does reflect the reality of options available to you.
And that reality shows higher performance for financial services workloads on the cloud (as measured using the COREx benchmark). I was as surprised as anyone. To the extent I even questioned the results with AMD!
So, there you have it. The ability to purchase at scales large enough to demand custom silicon is clearly more advantageous that running on vanilla bare metal.
For complete details you’ll have to wait till we release our paper. 😉 Subscribe here to make sure you don't miss it.
