Hatchbacks and Ferraris
Scaling compute can take different forms. Want to learn more?

“Imagine the workload is to transport millions of widgets across a car park. Increasing the clock speed is like swapping from your nan’s tiny hatchback to a Ferrari. Increasing the number of cores on the other hand is like having multiple hatchbacks all leaving the starting line at the same time.”
The above is an excerpt from chapter 2 of An Introduction to Supercomputers and HPC”. I probably should have included AI in the title too for the clicks right? 😁
While the title doesn’t say AI, it does talk (a little) about AI in the context of large scale computing. I mean, it would be hard not to right!? Here’s another quote:
“Whilst a supercomputer is often rated by its performance in FLOPs a data centre or large AI supercomputers are usually rated by their power consumption.”
