HPC Cloud Updates WE 17 Aug 2025
Updates to AWS, Azure & GCP in the last week relevant for HPC practitioner. If you’re on holiday like most of Europe you’re not missing a whole lot this week. A couple of new VM types or sizes. Some noise from Gartner with dots in squares but that’s pretty much your lot.

AWS
Need a single H100? New P5 instance types are now GA
New Instances: r8g in Jakarta, m8g in Seoul
Azure
New Esv6 and Esdv6 are now available in 128 and 192 vCPU sizes. Though unless you unless need that many vCPUs on a single machine there’s a strong chance that you’re better off with more machines with a lower vCPU count.
Google Cloud
I know it’s not traditional HPC… but Google Spanner pushing 11 million transactions a second is pretty cool, and does make you wonder… what if I did just stick it into my HPC platform?

I’m not a big believer in the Garter Magic Quadrants but it is interesting that they think Google have a more complete vision for cloud than AWS or Azure
