HPC Cloud Updates WE 28 Sep 2025
Updates to AWS, Azure & GCP in the last week relevant for HPC practitioners. Google give you a way to spin up VMs when they become available, AWS Compute Optimizer gets a bit better and Azure Cycle Cloud plays nicely with Hammerspace.

AWS
Weather modelling is one of the few HPC use cases that has SLA and regulatory requirements as stringent as financial services, so it’s quite interesting to see them adopt AI

AWS Compute Optimizer gets a bit smarter and can use another 99 instance types. I think we can comfortably outperform it still though 😉
New r8gb instance types are GA
They’re calling it Instance Attestation which I suppose is as good a name as AWS usually manages but this could be very useful for those of you running in highly regulated environments and needing to not only ensure software consistency but be able to prove it
New regional instances: i7i in Milan and N. California, c8gn in Frankfurt, Stockholm and Singapore
Azure
Cycle Cloud is shaping up to the be the backbone of Azure’s HPC offering. A guide on how to use it with Slurm and Hammerspace
Using Azure Disk Encryption? Might want to start moving off it now
Google Cloud
Want a VM that’s hard to come by and are happy to wait? Google now lets you do just that and spin it up once it’s available

Ok its AI not HPC but its kind of interesting
