Quantum #45

Issue #45 of the weekly HPC newsletter by HMx Labs. Project Stargate, AI and HPC in the UK, silicon diversity and more

Quantum #45

This week feels more like AI news than HPC news, but then it has a been a week where not only the tech news has been dominated by AI but all news. Poor little old school HPC is finding it hard to get a look in anywhere! More details below on Project Stargate and its increasingly inadequate UK counterpart, your usual HPC related cloud release notes and some takes from yours truly on silicon diversity and AI generated code.

I’ve never really been sold on the idea of serverless HPC personally but if you’d like an introduction to the concept this article does a pretty good job

Revolutionizing HPC with Serverless Computing - Cloud Dailywire
High-Performance Computing (HPC) has traditionally been associated with specialized clusters of powerful servers, complex scheduling systems, and rigorous performance optimizations. Over the years, HPC has been a driving force behind groundbreaking research in physics, genomics, climate science, financial modeling, and more. Today, however, we find ourselves at an interesting crossroads: serverless computing has come of

I don’t know if it counts as a supercomputer (and there’s a really interesting discussion to be had about what future supercomputers will look like) but this has to be largest budget for building compute so I’m going to include it here on the off chance you somehow missed this news

White House Announces $500B AI Data Center Infrastructure Build-Out - High-Performance Computing News Analysis | insideHPC
The Trump Administration ended its first full day of business with a major AI business announcement, that hundreds of billions of dollars – potentially trillions of dollars – will be invested in the build-out of AI infrastructure and data centers in the U.S. Joining President Trump at a White House press event late this afternoon […]

This was last week but amongst the outcomes from it is that we may indeed get another supercomputer in the UK after all (despite it being cancelled by the same incoming government only months ago)

Lets talk diversity

Diversity in HPC
Will 2025 be the year in which supercomputers are no longer homogenous?

Code is a liability. Unless its written by an AI apparently. Then it doesn’t matter and no one cares

Code is a Liability
In a world where LLM generated code replaces SaaS, how many lines of code will we have and who will maintain them?
