Quantum #52

Issue #52 of the weekly HPC newsletter by HMx Labs. One year old, GTC and the obligatory NVIDIA and AI updates as well some a DORA report on the adoption of GenAi for coding.

Quantum #52

If this newsletter were human, it would be taking its first step about now. It’s one year old this week. Issue 52 fresh off the electronic press. It was also, of course, the week that hosted GTC so naturally we’re quite AI and GPU heavy in the news.

To a lot less fan fare than GTC,  we also saw the release of the DORA report on the Impact of Generative AI in Software Development.

Gen AI can boost developer productivity and flow
DORA report: Generative AI can boost developer productivity but impacts software delivery.

It’s a bit long but interesting reading non the less. For me a couple of things stand out. Firstly,  the impact of AI seems pretty small, single figure percentages, which is a far cry from the hype currently being peddled. Secondly, they also have some interesting insights to some of the negative impacts such as on delivery performance (stability down 7.2%, throughput down 1.5%).

Exo 2: Less lines of code for your HPC?

High-performance computing, with much less code
The “Exo 2” language allows programmers to write “schedules” that explicitly control how the compiler generates code. This allows performance engineers to transform simple programs into complex programs that do the same thing as the specification, but faster.
