Quantum #54

Issue #54 of the weekly HPC newsletter by HMx Labs: HPC and AI convergence, KubeCon updates, Intel’s future. It’s all here in your weekly HPC summary.

Quantum #54

Given it was KubeCon in London this week it should be no surprise that much of the news from the hyperscalers was around Kubernetes. See the cloud release notes for more.

This edition of Quantum has been brought to you from the south coast of England. Written, along with the previous edition of Random Bytes about DORA and GenAI, at various points from the New Forest to Lyme Regis with a “van life” twist.

An interesting experiment in the ability to work remotely which was largely successful. I have to admit though, by the end of the second day the novelty of van life had all but worn off for me! The kids were still loving it though.

In The News

Updates from the big three clouds on all things HPC.

HPC Cloud Updates WE 06 Apr 2025
Updates to AWS, Azure & GCP in the last week relevant for HPC practitioners. Includes news from KubeCon, a new version of AWS Parallel Cluster and mixing Azure Cycle Cloud with Slurm on K8. Yes lots of of K8 related updates of course!

If you’re using Oracle Cloud this is probably something you want to read

Oracle customers confirm data stolen in alleged cloud breach is valid
Despite Oracle denying a breach of its Oracle Cloud federated SSO login servers and the theft of account data for 6 million people, BleepingComputer has confirmed with multiple companies that associated data samples shared by the threat actor are valid.

Intel’s future is still far from clear but quite critical for a lot of its current customers. An agreement between Intel and TSMC to operate Intel’s fabs might be good news for assuring customers of future CPUs but feels a bit like we’re reaching a critical reliance on TSMC?

Report: TSMC to Operate Intel Fabs under Tentative Joint Venture - High-Performance Computing News Analysis | insideHPC
The online technology publication The Information reported today that Intel and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company have reached a tentative agreement to form a joint venture in which TSMC would operate Intel’s chipmaking facilities.

Quite an interesting piece from HPC Wire on the convergence of HPC and AI, in particular the ever present question of is HPC big enough to justify its own dedicated CPUs/GPUs or will it have to make do with mainstream or AI specific processors. Skip down to the “Beneficial Convergence or Scary Collision?” section for the interesting stuff.

Why are we ignoring DORA on the impact of GenAI in software?

DORA on GenAI
DORA has a positively framed, but damning, opinion on the state of GenAI in software engineering
