Quantum #63
Issue #63 of the weekly HPC newsletter by HMx Labs. ISC kicks off, AWS drop prices on GPUs and I ponder writing about the relationship between FSI and HPC and how this relates to AI

As I write this on Sunday, and surely by the time most of you will be reading it on Monday, many of you will either be in transit for ISC or already in Hamburg.

There are a couple of interesting things I wanted to pick up on that were in the news over the last week that aren’t ISC related though. Firstly, there was much backslapping on AWS dropping prices on its NVIDIA GPU EC2 instances. This is all being pinned on the wonderful economies of scale that AWS has. Right. Fancy sharing your utilisation or demand? Neoclouds proving to be a thorn in your side perchance? Of course not, it is purely out the goodness of Andy and Matt’s hearts that they’re choosing to pass on discounts right now. Got it. Are there any real tech journalists left out there at this point at all?
The second is the article by Addison Snell about AI and HPC (link below). I’ve never had the hard data to share like Addison does, but this is a topic I’ve hesitated to write about for some time. Touching on it at the edges every now and again but never really delving in to it. Not only from an AI perspective but also from a financial services perspective which he touches on but doesn’t go in to. Writing about it from my anecdotal perspective seems rather riskier than the factual approach taken here by HPC Wire. Maybe I’ll write it anyway and bury it under the mountain of news that will be released during ISC this week.
Oh, for the avoidance of any doubt, the image is AI generated. I’m currently sat in London
