Quantum #73
Issue #73 of the weekly HPC newsletter by HMx Labs. Alpine coasters (but not in the Alps), HPC Club and heterogeneous HPC.

Today’s weekly HPC news comes to you from an altitude of 1,323m atop Col de la Faucille, well some of it anyway. Work was a little interrupted by a summer sledge on rails for a bit. 3 goes back to back, I’m feeling nauseous and she wants to go again 🤣

There’s some CPU related news (some about Intel of course) and this is certainly a topic in which I’m seeing a rise in interest, even though most of the world seems obsessed with GPUs. And not just for the soap opera aspect either.
As suspected at the start of this year, interest in the ability to run workloads on heterogeneous environments is slowly ticking up. This is something we’re planning to focus on in more depth. The challenges in successfully running on heterogenous hardware extend beyond scheduling (which in itself isn’t trivial) to dealing with compatibility and floating point number differences at application level. Stay tuned for more.
We also decided that we would run four HPC Club events after all this year and now have one scheduled for the 24th September, with a small twist in that it will take place in Bristol. Some aspects such as the guest speaker still need to be finalised but aside from this details are on the HPC Club website as is the link to sign up if you’d like to attend.

HPC cloud release notes. Another fairly quiet week but if you enjoy dots in quadrants then you’ll have something to keep you amused.

Not exactly HPC related but quite an interesting interview with Lisa Su, CEO of AMD

Stuck on Intel? Then the possibility of a life line from the US government is probably music to your ears right about now. Or maybe its offset (or worse) by the 15% tariff rates for NVIDIA and AMD to sell to China. I don’t think I’ve seen the ability to do HPC this affected by politics in my career so far.

An extra HPC Club this year, this time in Bristol

Got a bit of meter anxiety? Don’t worry you’re not the only one. If you’re thinking about moving entirely to cloud and you rely on innovation this might be worth contemplating
