Quantum #78

Issue #78 of the weekly HPC newsletter by HMx Labs. Well that was a bit of an ai-coaster. Nvidia taking a stake in Intel and investing heavily in the UK. Microsoft and others get in on the action to spin up new AI bit farms in the UK too.

Quantum #78

Well, it’s been an eventful week in the large scale compute space this week even if you don’t really care about AI models.

On Wednesday morning, for the seconds time in a week, my news feeds were filled with British flags. As a brown Londoner, after the weekend’s protests, it was with some trepidation that I read the accompanying articles. I needn’t have worried though it was merely UK Gov taking a page out of Uncle Sam’s playbook and attempting to AI boost the UK economy. I wonder if all these GPUs coming to the UK means we should be rewriting our HPC code to take advantage of them? Wonder where we will magic up the electricity to run them all too.

The second big surprise was Nvidia taking a stake in Intel. That prompted several interesting conversations this week with friends at various CPU/GPU manufacturers. I started out this year stating that HPC will have to get more heterogeneous, what I didn’t bank on was that we’d have this much drama to go along with the ride!
