Which Cloud VM?
With almost 2000 different VM types available on the cloud from the hyperscalers, how do you select which one to use?
There are more types of virtual machines on the cloud than there are ways to eat a Cadbury Creme Egg (for my non British readers, or simply those of you under the age of 40 see here).
At the time of writing AWS have over 750, Azure over 850 and while Google may seem to be trailing with “only” 250 predefined types they also let you cook up any combination of hardware you like to define your own machine type.
So, my question to you today dear reader is quite simply, how do you pick yours? Especially for HPC workloads and especially if you’re among the select few that actually run transient or ephemeral large scale compute on the cloud.
What’s your selection process and how automated is it? What happens when new machine types are introduced?
Getting it “wrong” might only mean doubling your cloud bill so not a big deal right? 😊
