Founder’s Dilemma

What do you do when your job outgrows your own capabilities?

Founder’s Dilemma

The problem with founding a company is that you end up doing a lot of roles that you’re not necessarily very good at. Or want to do. Or at least that’s what I’m finding. The other problem is that if you don’t like your job anymore you can’t really quit 🤣

Which puts me in a bit of a quandary. I like working with clients and solving their problems, I like doing all the technical bits. I’m not such a big fan of everything else that comes with running a company. But I don’t think we’re really at a position yet where we can afford to hire some big shot COO to come in and take that pain away. We’re also still small enough that the role wouldn’t even be COO. It would be COO + CMO + Head of sales + the only salesperson + the only marketing person + general admin (but not finance or HR we have that covered) + chasing me and other senior people to do what we promised.

I’m not entirely sure what such a role would even be called. Founder’s associate? Chief of Staff? Office Manager? Assuming (and that’s a pretty big leap just there) I could even define the role how on earth would we then select the right candidate given I’ve just admitted these are things that I’m bad at, so every candidate should be better than me.

Who the heck would want to do that for a salary we could actually afford to pay for it? Especially as it will involve chasing and holding Kamran accountable too and I’m reliably informed by other people in the team that he’s scary 😀

Your thoughts, experiences and suggestions would be very welcome!
