HPC and CERN

I finally got a chance to visit CERN and learn a little more about HPC in the world of physics

HPC and CERN

For the last few years, I’ve spent my summers living above the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. Quite Literally. Till now though I had always been too busy working to actually visit!

Finally changed that. Such an amazing facility and has fantastic visitor section too.

I’ve worked in HPC for many years and figures of thousands of CPUs rarely impress me anymore. Even so, I was slightly taken aback during one of the presentations when they casually mentioned they use half a million CPUs across the globe to process the data collected by the LHC 😮

I have no idea if that’s genuinely concurrent use or not but assuming it is, that’s mighty impressive. Makes all the systems we build to compute financial risk look like toys by comparison!

My HPC experience hasn’t ever really stretched into this domain. Would love to learn more. Anyone in my network work in this area?
