Should Your HPC Scheduler Also be a Trader?

If compute became an exchange traded commodity tomorrow, would you manage to adapt how you use cloud capacity?

No?

Well, it’s a good thing that the CME proposals that were originally to slated start trading on Oct 5th have been delayed then huh 😁

I am of course ignoring the fact that those wouldn’t have physically settled, and they were limited to GPUs only, but let’s pretend for a minute. What if we could exchange trade cloud capacity tomorrow. How does that change your use the cloud compute?

Would you need a trading desk to secure the compute you need? Could your supercomputer trade and secure its demands automatically? Fun questions to speculate on.

Might also not be as far away as you think if the big players keep pushing the narrative they are with making compute a tradeable commodity. It probably also won’t be something you can adapt to overnight unless you’re already able to run elastic multi cloud workloads efficiently.

Something to ponder on.
