HPC Club: Multi Cloud Software Defined Supercomputing

We’ve all been there. The regulator just asked for a rerun of three months of risk, or your model training run just failed and you need to start again. Either way, you’ve got a metric ton of compute to run and everyone wants it yesterday. But shockingly no one delivered another 50 racks into your data centre overnight. Tough spot huh?
This is the exact scenario your friendly cloud solution architect wants you to think about when she comes to visit. And she’s not wrong.
Problem is, it’s never that easy is it. Especially if you need (or want) to be able to use multiple clouds. I mean, it’s not like the CSPs had a nice meeting and decided to standardise the APIs to make your life easier. Want to run on multiple clouds? The work increases, at best linearly, with each cloud you add. (Except, that’s not quite true, we all know code complexity doesn’t increase linearly with quantity. If only.)
The dream up of spinning up supercomputers on a whim, using compute across multiple providers for either capacity or resilience seems to remain possible yet harder than it should be.
